Twenty-year-old Santiago works in a mindless data centre by day and by night obsessively searches gay hookup apps to see who’s available. One night, as he runs from sex clubs to potential sexual encounters, he begins to realize that while sex may be plentiful, intimacy is a rarity.
Stylish feature debut from Argentinian director Tadeo Pestaño Caro, A Few Feet Away is an unsparing and insightful look at youth lost in the gay world of today and the impact of dating apps on self-esteem and relationships. It received its international premiere at London’s BFI Flare LGBTQIA+ Film Festival and stars Max Suen (The Pleasure Is Mine) as Santiago.
Director’s Statement
A Few Feet Away stems from the experiences my friends and I had in our early twenties, exploring sex and intimacy through the anonymity of the internet. It captures a time when we were stepping into the adult world for the first time, with nothing but our phones and desires to guide us. From this new sex-affective logicnthat shapes our generation, emerges a coming-of-age story where the conflict no longer lies in accepting one’s sexuality within a heteronormative society, but in affirming one’s identity in a world where blocking or canceling someone is always just a tap away.
