Yes, Apple TV is apparently living in a different timeline — claiming they posted this on December 17th, 2025, despite the fact it only materialised today, January 7th. Time travel? A Titan glitch? Someone hit “schedule” instead of “publish”? We may never know.

But the news itself? Absolutely massive.

Apple TV has officially announced a brand‑new untitled Young Lee Shaw prequel series, expanding Legendary’s Monsterverse and bringing Wyatt Russell back to reprise his role as Colonel Lee Shaw. Emmy‑nominated writer‑producer Joby Harold has been tapped as showrunner — and under a new overall deal with Legendary, he’ll now oversee the entire Monsterverse slate for Apple TV, guiding both new and returning Titans.

What the New Series Is About

The spinoff follows a young Colonel Lee Shaw, an American operative who, in 1984, embarked on a covert mission behind Soviet lines to stop the USSR from unleashing a colossal new Titan capable of levelling the United States and reshaping the Cold War. Spy thriller meets kaiju chaos — yes please.

Wyatt Russell stars and executive produces, making this the first Monsterverse series centred entirely on a single human character’s past… and the Titan‑sized consequences that follow.

Part of Apple’s Growing Monsterverse Lineup

This prequel joins the critically acclaimed global hit Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which returns for its highly anticipated Season 2 on 27 February 2026. Harold also executive produces that series, making him the Monsterverse’s new narrative architect.

Who’s Behind the Scenes?

The new series is executive produced by:

  • Joby Harold & Tory Tunnell (Safehouse Pictures)
  • Wyatt Russell
  • Chris Black
  • Kyle Bradstreet
  • Alex Boden
  • Max Borenstein
  • Andy Goddard

Produced by: Kei Banno, Brian Rogers, Kenji Okuhira

Toho’s Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive produce on behalf of the company that owns Godzilla — and licensed the character to Legendary as part of their long‑standing partnership.

What Apple & Legendary Are Saying

Morgan Wandell, Apple TV’s head of international content development: “Viewers around the world haven’t been able to get enough of ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’… this new spinoff will kick off an epic Monsterverse expansion.”

Joby Harold: “I could not feel more privileged to be a part of building out this wildly iconic universe.”

Jason Clodfelter, Legendary Television: “Joby is a remarkable storyteller… this marks an exciting new era for the franchise.”

The Monsterverse So Far

Legendary’s Monsterverse spans films, TV, games, comics, toys, and live experiences — all built around the idea that humanity is trying to survive in a world where ancient monsters are very, very real.

The franchise includes:

  • Godzilla (2014)
  • Kong: Skull Island (2017)
  • Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
  • Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
  • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) — the highest‑grossing Godzilla film ever
  • Godzilla x Kong: Supernova (2027) — coming soon
  • Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023– )

Combined, the Monsterverse has earned over $2.5 billion at the global box office.
