Before Star Wars became a captivating film or a franchise full of galaxy-spanning series, it all began with a simple tale of a brave farm boy, a resilient princess, and the Jedi who changed their lives.

This October, Star Wars Reads returns for a month-long celebration of the power of storytelling, inspiring readers of all ages.

“For nearly 50 years, Star Wars stories have connected generations of readers through unforgettable characters, grand adventures, and incredible formats. Star Wars Reads is an opportunity to celebrate that legacy, the power of reading, and welcome readers of all ages into a galaxy far, far away,” says Michael Siglain, creative director of Lucasfilm Publishing. “Partnering with organizations like First Book expands access to books and educational resources for fans of all ages, and helps readers to find their own Star Wars story.”

PopcornpiecesStorytelling is one of humanity’s oldest and most enduring traditions. Long before cinemas, television series and streaming platforms existed, people gathered to share tales about heroes, villains, triumphs, mysteries and adventures. These stories entertained audiences, preserved history and helped communities pass knowledge from one generation to the next.

The power of storytelling lies in its ability to create connections. A great story allows people to see the world through someone else’s eyes, experience unfamiliar situations and feel emotions that might otherwise remain distant. Whether it is a sweeping fantasy epic, an intimate drama or a thrilling science-fiction adventure, stories help audiences understand characters, ideas and experiences in meaningful ways.

Cinema has elevated storytelling into a unique art form. By combining writing, performance, music, cinematography and visual design, filmmakers can immerse viewers in worlds that feel vivid and unforgettable. Some stories transport audiences to galaxies far away, while others focus on everyday moments that reveal the complexities of human life. Regardless of scale, the most memorable films succeed because they engage audiences emotionally and leave a lasting impression.

Television has also become a powerful storytelling medium. Longer formats allow creators to explore characters in greater depth, building relationships and conflicts over multiple episodes or even several years. Viewers often form strong attachments to fictional worlds because they spend extended periods travelling alongside the characters, witnessing their growth, setbacks and victories.

Beyond entertainment, storytelling plays an important role in education, culture and personal identity. Stories help explain traditions, share perspectives and encourage discussion about important issues. Documentaries, biographies and historical dramas demonstrate how narrative can bring real events to life, making complex subjects more accessible and engaging for audiences.

The digital age has expanded the reach of storytelling even further. Social media, podcasts, online videos and interactive experiences have created new ways for people to share stories with global audiences. A compelling narrative can now travel across continents within moments, inspiring conversations among people who may never meet in person.

What makes storytelling truly special is its universality. Every culture tells stories, and every person has stories to share. While technology continues to evolve, the basic desire to connect through narrative remains unchanged. People still seek tales that make them laugh, think, dream and reflect.

From ancient myths to modern blockbusters, storytelling continues to shape how we understand ourselves and the world around us. It bridges generations, sparks creativity and reminds us that powerful ideas often begin with a simple story well told.
