Jean Malin & Hollywood’s Pansy Craze
Named after a slang term for an effeminate gay man, the Pansy Craze of the 1920s and 1930s made its way to pre-Code Hollywood and influenced numerous films at the time. Jean Malin, a drag artist and icon of the movement, opened the Club New Yorker in Los Angeles which attracted stars like Marlene Dietrich, Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, and Carole Lombard. TCM’s David Stenn explores the history of this brief-lived movement and its impact on queer representation in Hollywood.
