Pre-Code Hollywood: Tribute to Louise Brooks
Depending on when one thinks the pre-Code era begins, Louise Brooks only appeared in either three or four pre-Codes: “The Canary Murder Case” (if the pre-Code era begins in 1929); “It Pays to Advertise” (1931); “God’s Gift to Women” (1931); “Windy Riley Goes to Hollywood” (1931). The latter is a short film, and Brooks only appears briefly in both “God’s Gift to Women” and “It Pays to Advertise.” Personally I believe the pre-Code era begins in March 1930, but really wanted to use clips from “The Canary Murder Case,” in which she has a larger role. Unfortunately, her U.S. and German silent films are not pre-Codes, nor is Prix de beauté (as it wasn’t released in the U.S. until the 1980s), so the clips in this video come from just the four films listed above.
