Pressure – Released on BFI Blu-ray on 7 September 2026
Sir Horace Ové’s pioneering debut PRESSURE (1975) explores the tensions facing a young Black British man caught between family, identity and political radicalisation. Showcasing the BFI National Archive’s recent 4K restoration, this is the first time Pressure has ever been made available on Blu-ray. The disc also features Ové’s 1969 film Baldwin’s N*****.
With a screenplay written by Sir Horace Ové and fellow Trinidadian author Sam Selvon (The Lonely Londoners), Pressure tells the story of Tony (Herbert Norville), a bright school leaver and son of West Indian immigrants, who finds himself torn between his parents’ church-going conformity and his brother’s Black Power militancy. A groundbreaking and authentic exploration of the anxieties of an emerging second-generation of West Indians in Britain, Pressure is a significant title in the history of British cinema and remains as relevant as ever with its themes of police corruption, discrimination and employment inequality on an individual and institutional level. Originally funded by the BFI Production Board and heralded as the first full-length Black British film, Sir Horace Ové’s masterpiece was recently restored in 4K by the BFI National Archive and The Film Foundation with funding provided by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation, with additional thanks to the BFI Philanthropy ‘Pioneers of Black British Filmmaking consortium’.
